CMYK Vs. RGB

I'm reading about color modes in my Photoshop book for class, and it made me realize something odd: CMYK files have an extra channel, so they're 33% larger. However, CMYK can not produce as many colors as RGB can. Also, Windows XP runs at 32 bit color, but RGB is only 24 bit. CMYK is 32 bit due to the extra channel, but why have 32 bit if a monitor can not display CMYK?
